State Senate Passes SB 792

Senate Approves Senate Bill 792!
June 2nd, 20093

After a long and open process, the California State Senate, today, approved Senate Bill 792. Submitted by Senator Mark Leno and sponsored by the City and County of San Francisco, SB 792 represents the necessary and vital next step in the process that began with last year’s overwhelming approval of Proposition G.

Proposition G and SB 792 supports lauded Senator Leno’s efforts to codify their vision into law. The Bill authorizes the exchange of park land between the City and the State and ensures that all of the Parks at Candlestick Point, will remain open despite their designation for closure in the Governor’s budget.

“This is a victory for the people of San Francisco, who sent a loud message last June that this project was vital to the future of the City,” said Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), the bill’s author, “Given the Governor’s desire to close the Candlestick State Park, it was imperative that the Legislature come together and save the area’s only Bay Front public park for the people of Bayview and San Francisco to enjoy for years to come.”

With its Senate approval, SB 792 now enters the state Assembly for debate and approval. To read more about SB 792, please click here.

Citizens Advisory Committee Approves Design for Community Built Homes at Hunters Point Shipyard
Blocks 53 and 54 to include 157 Residence

San Francisco, California (July 16, 2009) – The Hunters Point Shipyard Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) has approved the designs for the next 157 homes to be built by community developers on a hilltop parcel overlooking the former Navy base.

“We are pleased that the Citizens Advisory Committee shares our enthusiasm for the look of these new residences in The Shipyard,” said Kofi Bonner, President of Lennar Urban’s Bay Area Division. “These blocks represent an opportunity for the Bayview community builders to directly participate in the development of this neighborhood. The residences will be built with roof-mounted solar panels and the latest in environmentally sustainable materials and design. Residents in southeast San Francisco have waited a long time to see positive change in their neighborhoods. Over the next several years, they will watch this new addition to their community take shape." read full press release>>

Our Voices Were Heard! Prop G Passes!

San Francisco voters have overwhelmingly approved a new and far more promising future for the residents of Bayview Hunters Point.

While votes are still being counted, Proposition G passed with over 60% of the vote, and Proposition F was defeated by an equal margin.

The Yes on G victory means that we can at last begin creating thousands of affordable homes, hundreds of acres of parks, 8,000 good paying jobs, an $17 million job training program, and a potential site for a new 49ers stadium.

Proposition G authorizes the land use provisions needed to create an integrated mixed-use development on 770 acres in the southeastern tip of San Francisco that is currently home to an abandoned Navy shipyard and Candlestick Point. It also rescinds the city’s obligation to provide $100 million in bond funding for a new football stadium.

The measure allows for the construction of up to 10,000 homes at the two sites plus space for retail, offices and more than 300 acres of park and open space. Thirty-two percent of the housing will be affordable—believed to be the highest commitment of its kind in the city’s history. Lennar Urban will donate $27.3 million to residents of the adjacent Bayview-Hunters Point to assist in housing purchases, either in the new development or the existing neighborhood.

Thank you to all the voters and community support! We can now begin the work necessary to clean-up and re-vitalize Bayview-Hunters Point for everyone.
