City Insider: Shipyard Living Robert Selna | San Francisco Chronicle | April 7, 2009 By mid-2011, you might be able to buy a townhome or rent an apartment at the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard - if things go according to plan. Developer Lennar Corp. is working to remake the former Navy base and Candlestick Point into neighborhoods with 10,500 housing units, retail and commercial development, parks and possibly a new football stadium. On Monday, Lennar released renderings and models of the first two blocks of housing that would be built on a shipyard hilltop. (Check it out at sfgate.com/blogs/cityinsider.) Lennar is seeking approval tonight from the San Francisco Redevelopment Commission for an increase in the number of rental apartments it will build in one of the blocks - from 51-63 - partly in an effort to get more bang for its buck. Fifteen percent of the housing must be made available at below-market rates. Lennar Vice President John J. Robertson said the company hopes that the design of the new housing would persuade buyers to invest in real estate that for some time will sit next to a construction site. And while the hilltop area has been cleared for development, much of the shipyard is still contaminated with industrial waste and is the subject of a federal cleanup.
