As part of the plan to provide additional affordable housing in the Bayview, the Jobs, Parks and Housing Initiative calls for the complete rebuilding of the Double Rock housing project, giving new hope to the low-income tenants who have endured decades of high crime, poverty and neglect. “Rebuild Our Lives” “We are asking San Francisco voters to support our efforts to rebuild our homes and our lives,” said Lavelle Shaw, President of the Double Rock Tenants Association. “After many, many years, this plan represents real hope for our community.” Double Rock, which is also known as Alice Griffith, was originally built in 1962 as military housing for shipyard workers. It was transformed into public housing for low- income tenants more than thirty years ago. No Dislodging of Residents The plan to rebuild the housing project will be implemented without dislodging current residents. New housing will be built alongside the existing site. When it is complete, current tenats will be able to move to the new housing. The current site will then be demolished and additional housing will be built. Although a new community center and landscaping has been added in recent years, the housing remains in poor condition and there have been no fundamental improvements to the building since its construction.
