Citizens Advisory Committee Approves Design for Community Built Homes at Hunters Point Shipyard

San Francisco Sentinel | July 16, 2009

The Hunters Point Shipyard Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) has approved the designs for the next 157 homes to be built by community developers on a hilltop parcel overlooking the former Navy base.

“We are pleased that the Citizens Advisory Committee shares our enthusiasm for the look of these new residences in The Shipyard,” said Kofi Bonner, President of Lennar Urban’s Bay Area Division. “These blocks represent an opportunity for the Bayview community builders to directly participate in the development of this neighborhood. The residences will be built with roof-mounted solar panels and the latest in environmentally sustainable materials and design. Residents in southeast San Francisco have waited a long time to see positive change in their neighborhoods. Over the next several years, they will watch this new addition to their community take shape.”

The design plans for Blocks 53 and 54 were presented this week to the CAC which unanimously endorsed and authorized them for consideration by the San Francisco Redevelopment Commission. The Redevelopment Commission approved earlier this year the designs for the first 88 new homes to be built at Hunters Point.

A total of 1,400 homes are planned for the first phase at the new Shipyard community. The pouring of foundations for the first series of residences is expected to begin by the end of 2009.

Portions of Blocks 53 and 54 are being developed in conjunction with Bayview companies MDC/C Churchwell LLC and BAMEC, Inc., the designated Community Builders. The blocks will feature a mix of 1, 2, and 3 bedroom flats, mews and townhomes. Responding to the wishes of the community, the new units will have a family friendly plan and layout. Construction for these blocks is expected to begin in mid-2010.

Under the Community Builder Program, Lennar is partnering with local Bayview area developers to build more than 30 percent of the homes during Phase I of the Shipyard revitalization. This program marks the first time in San Francisco history that a major development has included the direct participation of representatives of the community who will receive mentoring benefit and financial participation from the redevelopment.

Approximately 9,000 permanent jobs are expected to be generated through the revitalization efforts at Hunters Point Shipyard and Candlestick Point. This multi-phase development project, approved by the Board of Supervisors and authorized by city voters in 2008, will also

  • accelerate the environmental remediation of Hunters Point Shipyard
  • create more than 300 acres of parks and open space
  • improve State Parks facilities in southeast San Francisco
  • rebuild the Alice Griffith Housing Development
  • establish permanent space for the Hunters Point Shipyard artists community
  • add new public transit and bicycle routes through Bayview-Hunters Point
  • preserve a stadium option for The San Francisco 49ers

“At a time when construction projects have come to a halt all over the country, San Francisco is moving forward with the most important urban revitalization effort in city history,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom.

“During these challenging economic times, this project will bring jobs and opportunity to San Francisco and will provide a better future for the families and children of Bayview-Hunters Point.”
