Abandoned and neglected shipyard set for renewal

June ballot measure would bring jobs, housing & shipyard clean-up

Since the Navy closed the Hunters Point Shipyard in 1974, this once-thriving economic engine has stood abandoned and neglected. Today, that could all change—with a plan to clean up and renew the Shipyard that could provide jobs, parks and housing to the neighboring Bayview and the City of San Francisco.

A Community-Led Plan

The community-led plan is focused on the Hunters Point Shipyard and Candlestick Point. It does not impact existing homes, residences or businesses in the Bayview. It is sponsored and supported by Bayview citizens, along with local and city leaders including Mayor Gavin Newsom. The initiative will require city voter approval on the June 2008 ballot.

“This measure is not only important to the people of District 10 but to the entire city,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom, a leading proponent of the plan.

“It brings jobs, much-needed affordable housing and over 400 acres of new parks and open space for San Francisco.”

Jobs, Parks and Housing

If the project is approved, it will be undertaken and implemented by Lennar Homes of California, Inc., led by Kofi Bonner. The plan…

  • Renews Candlestick Point and the Hunters Point Shipyard
  • Speeds up long-promised federal funding for the environmental clean-up at Hunters Point Shipyard
  • Creates hundreds of construction and permanent jobs for Bayview residents
  • Builds 8,500 to 10,000 homes, with entry-level homeownership opportunities. Includes up to 2,500 affordable homes, for families at varying levels of affordability,  along with homes dedicated to seniors with necessary services
  • Rebuilds the Double Rock public housing project without dislodging residents
  • Creates over 400 acres of parks and open space
  • Allows a new stadium for the 49ers with no public funding
  • Builds additional housing, parks and open space at the site of Monster Park and the surrounding parking lots.
