June ballot measure would bring jobs, housing & shipyard clean-up Since the Navy closed the Hunters Point Shipyard in 1974, this once-thriving economic engine has stood abandoned and neglected. Today, that could all change—with a plan to clean up and renew the Shipyard that could provide jobs, parks and housing to the neighboring Bayview and the City of San Francisco. A Community-Led Plan The community-led plan is focused on the Hunters Point Shipyard and Candlestick Point. It does not impact existing homes, residences or businesses in the Bayview. It is sponsored and supported by Bayview citizens, along with local and city leaders including Mayor Gavin Newsom. The initiative will require city voter approval on the June 2008 ballot. “This measure is not only important to the people of District 10 but to the entire city,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom, a leading proponent of the plan. “It brings jobs, much-needed affordable housing and over 400 acres of new parks and open space for San Francisco.” Jobs, Parks and Housing If the project is approved, it will be undertaken and implemented by Lennar Homes of California, Inc., led by Kofi Bonner.
